Lo squalo Fabietto

Periodo abbastanza avaro di soddisfazioni, questo, per quanto riguarda il poker. Non che abbia preso legnate particolari (al contrario, complice il tempo che sto dedicando all’Omaha Hi cash 0.10/0.25, soldini ne stanno entrando abbastanza regolarmente: ho toccato i 130$ su PokerStars e sono tornato sopra quota $300 su Full Tilt Poker), ma speravo che durante queste vacanze sarei riuscito a centrare qualche risultato di rilievo. Niente da fare. In bacheca non finisce nulla di particolare. Salvo il mio primo final table in un torneo MTT di Omaha Hi, che chiudo al quinto posto (su 148 giocatori ai nastri di partenza) complice una sculata tremenda del mio avversario.

Va beh, detto ciò, ho scoperto con piacere che le mie statistiche su Official Poker Ranking si sono un po’ risistemate. Questo nonostante quei maledetti di OPR abbiano iniziato a contare anche i tornei S&G, che da sempre erano dominio esclusivo di Sharkscope (sul quale figuro con un deficit di 150$, causa le pessime due settimane giocate a livello $10+1 nelle quali ho preso bastonate da paura). Ora appaio in attivo, seppur di poco. Da considerare ovviamente il fatto che qui è tenuto sotto controllo solo Full Tilt, quindi mancano all’appello un bel po’ di vittorie (vedi i 500 e passa dollari vinti su CDPoker, i 100 euro di Goldwin, i 100$ di Betway, ecc…). D’altronde, se ho conti aperti in una decina di sale e tutto quanto ho versato l’ho già riprelevato qualche tempo fa, non mi ci vuole molto per capire di essere in deciso attivo. E di questo sono contento.

Un sito predatorio

Veloce aggiornamento per segnalare come oggi pomeriggio abbia ufficialmente messo on line una paginetta dedicata a “The Predator”, il simulatore di Artificial Life sviluppato per la mia vecchia Tesi di laurea e recentemente aggiornato con l’introduzione di una pratica (almeno spero) GUI.

Sul sito potrete trovare le varie pubblicazioni legate a questo progetto (tra le quali l’abstract presentato ad ALife XI qualche settimana fa), i sorgenti, qualche binario ed infine tutti i grafici dei risultati.

La mappa dei nei

Continuo a scoprire cose nuove. Innanzitutto che i famosi “nei” si chiamano in realtà “nevi”. E che la cosiddetta “mappatura dei nei” si chiama in realtà “videodermatoscopia”. Ok, fin troppo facile. Oggi sono stato a fare una visita dermatologica.

Spassoso il dialogo tra il sottoscritto e la dermatologa, mentre con una telecamerina collegata ad un PC andava ad esplorare i punti neri del mio corpo (mo non fraintendete però!):

Cosa significhi la sua frase onestamente non lo so. E tantomeno ho voglia di preoccuparmi a riguardo. Suppongo che se fosse stata una cosa grave sarebbe già intervenuta. Ergo, credo che potrò passare il resto delle vacanze in tranquillità.

PS: in serata mi è arrivata l’offerta per fare da bloggatore, a contratto, per un sito di poker. Trattasi di un famoso portale tetesko che sta ora cercando di espandersi anche in altri Paesi. Vi terrò aggiornati nel caso in cui la faccenda dovesse andare in porto…

Oggi pomeriggio, per la prima volta ed alla tenera età di 25 anni, il sottoscritto ha imbracciato un fucile e sparato qualche colpo. Anche più di qualche colpo. Una cinquantina in totale. Con i quali ha abbattuto la bellezza di 5 piattelli. Ok, non una media olimpica. Ma in fondo poteva anche andare peggio. Luogo del delitto, il campo di tiro a volo (TAV) di Prignano, amena località sperduta nei meandri dell’appennino modenese.

Oltre alle orecchie ronzanti, un discreto dolorino alla spalla causato dal rinculo del fucile ed uno stomaco pienissimo quanto soddisfattissimo (questo grazie al dopo-sessione-di-sparo al ristorante La Busa, con scorpacciata di funghi deliziosi), me ne torno a casa con nel bagaglio un sacco di termini tecnici in più rispetto a quando sono partito. Calciolo, canne sovrapposte e bindella su tutti. Dei quali, ovviamente, ignoro nella maniera più assoluta il significato.

Tra l’altro, ho scoperto che pure a Plymouth sparano. Anche in università…

Abbiamo forse trovato un’alternativa al poker domenicale?

Un paio di letture estive

Aggiornamento rapido, giusto per segnalare come il sottoscritto sia uscito dalla rituale visita alla sezione libri della Festa dell’Unità di Roteglia con sottobraccio due nuovi volumi. Ovviamente leggeri, dato lo stato di ferie. Trattasi de Il sogno del maratoneta, di Giuseppe Pederiali, e L’inglese – lezioni semiserie, dell’intramontabile Beppe Severgnini.

Dopo essermi sparato metà libro di Pederiali durante la notte, posso già abbozzare su di esso un giudizio. Il quale non è per niente positivo. Malgrado sia molto scorrevole (lo dimostra il numero di pagine lette nel giro di così poche ore) e l’argomento trattato sia di quelli che tanto mi piacciono, il volume non decolla. Narrazione sempre piatta, per quanto l’autore si sia sforzato di inventare una forma piena di dialoghi tra il buon Dorando Pietri, la sua Teresa ed il fratello Ulpiano. L’unico merito del libro mi pare quello di far conoscere più da vicino la storia dello storico corridore carpigiano. Ma a questo punto, se davvero l’unico punto di forza è quello, tanto valeva scrivere un saggio.

Full Tilt Poker – Million Pound Challenge: la grande delusione

Dopo una giornata trascorsa ad abrustolirmi in piscina, la nottata me la sono passata dedicandomi alla mia passione di questi ultimi tempi (d’altronde sono in vacanza e posso permettermelo, no?): il poker on line. Nel dettaglio, ho provato per la quarta volta la qualificazione al Million Pound Challenge di Full Tilt. Al via siamo la bellezza di 390 giocatori. Parto alla grande ed al primo break sono già oltre quota 6,000 chips, contro le 3,000 di partenza, piazzato attorno alla 30esima posizione. Va bene anche la seconda ora, dove riesco ad incrementare, seppur non di molto, il mio stack. Dalla terza ora di gioco inizio a rimanere corto. Resto aggrappato al torneo con le unghie e coi denti, intenzionato a vendere cara la pellaccia. Entro al final table che sono il più corto e dopo una rimonta che ha del miracoloso. Anche per un paio di sculate che ho tirato (vedi ad esempio la prima mano qui sotto), alternata comunque a qualche colpo di sfia (vedi ad esempio la seconda mano):

Fatto sta che arrivo all’heads-up finale. Parto in svantaggio, ma con una mano incredibile (dove il mio avversario commette un errore da internamento) volo immediatamente al comando, con un vantaggio devastante. E qui commetto l’errore che ricorderò a lungo. Ma davvero a lungo. Mentre già mi vedevo a Londra a cercare di agguantare il milione di sterline in palio, inizio a spingere come un matto, convinto che ormai sia fatta. E invece il mio avversario riesce in un’incredibile rimonta e mi sbatte fuori. Senza pietà. E io, alle 3.15 di notte, rimango davanti al computer come un’idiota. Con un pugno di mosche in mano, dopo cinque minuti di lucida follia. Ho gettato al vento un’occasione incredibile.

Posto qui di seguito il log dell’heads-up, ad imperitura memoria. Mi servirà da lezione. Una lezione pagata però a carissimo prezzo…

Una tranquilla giornata olimpica

Questa mattina, Michael Phelps, il mostro del Maryland, ha centrato la sua settima medaglia d’oro nella stessa Olimpiade. Eguagliato lo storico record di Mark Spitz risalente al lontano Monaco ’72. Nella gara dei 100m farfalla, però, c’è stato da sudare per l’americano. Niente gara in solitaria, questa volta. Milorad Čavić, il suo avversario, è stato in testa per gran parte della corsa. Salvo essere scavalcato da Phelps proprio all’ultima bracciata. In una maniera che ha dato adito a più di una perplessità. Per farla breve, a bordo vasca sono presenti dei sensori che si occupano di bloccare il cronometro una volta che vengono toccati dal nuotatore di turno. Non si tratta però di sensori ottici, ma bensì a pressione. Ergo, per attivarli, occorre esercitare su di essi una certa forza. La versione ufficiale vuole che Čavić sia arrivato per primo a bordo vasca (come si vede nitidamente dalle immagini), ma non con forza sufficiente per attivare il sensore. Phelps, invece, sarebbe arrivato dopo ma con una grande spinta. Ed avrebbe così bloccato il cronometro prima rispetto al suo avversario.

Dubbi ne rimarranno però sempre. Ed è questo il tasto su cui voglio insistere in questo post. La sfida tra Phelps e Čavić ha dimostrato, de facto, l’inutilità assoluta della tecnologia applicata allo sport. E di questa lezione dovrebbero farne tesoro tutti coloro che si battono in maniera ardita per introdurre la “tecnologia” nel calcio. La tecnologia non serve ad eliminare le discussioni. Bisogna farsene una ragione. Se, nonostante i sensori, il mondo sta discutendo di come Phelps abbia vinto la sua settima medaglia d’oro di Pechino, allora questo sta a significare che ricorrere a misure tecnologiche non serva assolutamente a nulla. Altra riprova l’abbiamo avuta sempre oggi dalla scherma, con il fioretto a squadre femminile. All’Italia è stata scippata in maniera indegna la finale per il primo posto. In questo sport, la moviola c’è. Poi, come successo oggi, i giudici non la usano o non sanno come usarla. Punto e a capo. Allora a cosa serve tutta questa tecnologia? Quali impatti avrebbe se venisse realmente introdotta nel calcio? Disastrosi, probabilmente. Nel senso di nulli. La gente, lo abbiamo visto, molto semplicemente non si fida di qualcosa che non conosce. E allora lasciamo il calcio così me.

Comunque, chiuso questo discorso, doverosa la citazione ad un altro mostro dell’atletica, al secolo Usain Bolt, dalla Giamaica. Che oggi ha polverizzato il record del mondo (già suo) sui 100m. In una maniera semplicemente imbarazzante. Non si è mai visto, nella storia delle Olimpiadi moderne, qualcuno vincere questo tipo di gara in maniera così facile. Con una superiorità tanto schiacciante da risultare irriverente. Questo uomo è un autentico marziano. E ora tutti noi siamo curiosi di vedere che razza di tempo potrebbe mai registrare costui se solo decidesse di correre 100m e non 80.

Ferragosto

Ora sì che mi sento in ferie. E a casa. Sveglia alle 11.30, colazione, doccia e poi via. In macchina. Per il pranzone di Ferragosto con i parenti. Menu di quelli che non saranno troppo estivi, ma a me fanno morire. Affettati come antipasto, pappardelle al cinghiale, tagliatelle ai funghi, arrosto di coniglio, involtini di qualche bestia sanguigna non meglio identificata. Il tutto condito da vini, sorbetti e amari a volontà. Davvero un bel modo per reinstaurare il feeling con la propria terra.

Rientrato a casa in serata, ho trovato una email del mio supervisor che mi segnalava un bell’articolo di Lewis Smith pubblicato dal Times On Line. Vi risparmio un clic e ripropongo l’articolo qui di seguito:

Don’t shoot down the flying saucer, it’s one of ours, to support urban warfare

Flying saucers could potentially be used to support troops engaged in urban warfare. The military is to assess whether the alien-like aircraft, Moon buggies and miniature flying robots are capable of detecting roadside bombs and insurgents without putting troops in the line of fire.

The saucers, which are less than a metre (3ft) across, have optical and infra-red cameras and can fly over enemy positions without the need for a remote-control operator.

The unusual devices are among the entrants in a Ministry of Defence competition aimed at encouraging the development of urban warfare equipment.

Eleven teams taking part in the final of the Grand Challenge, which starts today on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, will have the opportunity to show off their inventions in a purpose-built town that contains enemy snipers, roadside bombs, weapon-mounted vehicles and insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers, as well as innocent bystanders.

Major Matt Kelly, of the Royal Irish Regiment, said of urban warfare: “In the future there will be no alternative for us so we, as soldiers, need to know where the enemy is and why. This is where technology comes in.”

The option of sending in a robot to check what is behind a wall or to survey a town before deploying ground troops could minimise British casualties.

“If our system works it will save lives,” said Julia Richardson, who leads the Stellar team which created two unmanned aircraft and a robotic ground vehicle. “That’s what motivates us.”

The Stella system operates as a robotic team, with one unmanned aircraft mapping an enemy stronghold, and the second aircraft working with the ground vehicle to provide close inspections.

The devices, like others in the competition, are fitted with thermal and normal lens cameras linked to intelligent software that can interpret pictures to identify potential threats.

Chris Mellors, of the Mira team which developed the flying saucers, added: “The bottom line is, we want our technology to help our Forces.” The Mira team is made up of a mixture of people including BAE Systems and pupils from the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, Surrey.

Max Pengalley, whose son served in the Army, and Rob Mullins, who lost a friend in Iraq, are part of the Locust team, which has developed a foot-long aircraft with foam bodies. Both were anxious to make a device that was flexible and lightweight enough to be carried by troops on the front line. The camera, processor and radio used to beam images back to troops are the of a book of matches, and the receiver has been adapted from a handheld Satmap.

One of the more bizarre inventions taking part is the Tumbleweed Robot, which can transform from an unmanned aircraft into a rolling ball.

Raglan Tribe, of the Mindsheet team, helped to create a fleet of buggies that can whiz across rough terrain at up to 30mph as they search out roadside bombs and enemy personnel.

The buggies, like the other entries, are designed to be low-cost because, unlike the troops, they have to be expendable.

Baroness Taylor of Bolton, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said: “The UK has a world-class track record in scientific excellence and we want to draw on all of the expertise out there, from box-room inventors just starting out to the largest defence firms. The competition has been designed to provide an accessible and fun event for participants, but there is a very serious point to it.”

The winner of the competition will receive the R. J. Mitchell Trophy, named after the designer of the Spitfire fighter. The MoD will assess whether the inventions taking part in the final can be used on the front line.

Infine, in nottata, mentre riguardavo gli highlights della giornata olimpica, su commissione del buon Fungo, mi sono sparato un bel torneone su CDPoker (linko il .net, visto che i mitici filtri AAMS si limitano a bloccare il .com). Primo turno del satellite per il Sun City Milion, un torneo live da giocarsi in data imprecisata in Sud Africa. Peccato che l’impresa sia stata soltanto sfiorata. Chiudo infatti al 70esimo posto su 2,000 partecipanti, ma con solo i primi 5 promossi al turno successivo. Esco dal torneo, una volta tanto, senza nulla da recriminare. Corto, con buii a livelli astronomici (1,500/3,000 ed io con 13,000 in cassa), riesco finalmente a spillare un bel AK-s. Sono UTG, ma non conta. Sparo all-in e tutti foldano fino al BB, che chiama e scopre KK. Nessun asso al flop, ma bensì il terzo K, che mi manda anticipatamente a letto.

Detto tutto ciò, sono ancora in tempo per augurare buon Ferragosto a tutti voi?
