The Poker Tournament Formula – quick reference chart

The Poker Tournament Formula – quick reference chart
If sitting behind a competitive chip stack (more than 30BB), look at the cards first. If they don’t fit the card strategy, then opt for the position strategy. If the available chip stack consists of less then 30BB, follow the chip strategy.
Position strategy (pre-flop):
- UTG, UTG+1, third position, fourth position: fold
- raising seat, CO: raise if first in, otherwise fold
- button: raise if first in, call any number of limpers or one raiser (up to 3-4x BB), otherwise fold
- SB: call in an unraised pot, otherwise fold
- BB: raise if SB limps in with no other player in the pot, call if SB raises 3-4x BB with no other players in the pot, otherwise fold
Position strategy (post-flop):
- he checks, you bet
- he bets, you fold (if the bet is a small CB, close or less than half pot, re-raise him immediately, otherwise fold if the bet is bigger than that)
Card strategy (assuming a competitive chip stack):
- EP (blinds, UTG, UTG+1):
first in: raise with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ
not first in: raise or re-raise with JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, call with 77, 88, 99, TT, AQ, AJ - MP (third position, fourth position):
follow EP strategy
first in: raise with KQs, QJ,s JTs
not first in: call with KQs, QJs, JTs - LP (raising seat, cut-off, button):
follow EP and MP strategies
first in: raise ATC
not first in: call with 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, AT, A9s, T9s, 98s, 87s
button: call any standard raise ATC
Chip strategy:
- competitive stack (more than 30 BB):
follow basic card strategy
- short chip stack (21 to 30 BB):
EP (blinds, UTG, UTG+1):
first in: raise with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, AK, AQ, AJ,limp in with KK, AA (and reraise all-in any raise)
not first in: raise all-in or reraise all-in with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ
otherwise fold - very short chip stack (11 to 20 BB):
any position: raise or reraise all-in with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ, KQ, KJ, KT, QJ
LP (raising seat, cut-off, button):
first in: raise all-in ATC - desperate chip stack (10 or fewer BB):
before the BB arrives move all-in with any hands containing an A, a K, any two cards both valued ten or higher, any pocket pair, any suited connectors down to 87, regardless how many opponents are already into the pot. If first in, the all-in move should be made also with any hand of Q9, Q8, Q7, J9, J8, T9. If none of the above hands appear before the blinds come around again, make the all-in move from UTG with ATC.
MP (third position, fourth position):
first in (stack between 25 to 30 BB): raise with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, AK, AQ, AJ, limp in with KK, AA (and reraise all-in any raise)
first in (stack between 20 to 24 BB): raise with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ, KQs, QJs, JTs
not first in: raise all-in or reraise all-in with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ
otherwise fold
LP (raising seat, cut-off, button):
first in (stack between 25 to 30 BB): raise all-in with 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, AK, AQ, AJ, AT, A9s, limp in with KK, AA (and re-raise all-in any raise)
first in (stack between 20 to 24 BB): raise all-in with 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ, KQs, QJs, JTs
otherwise make a standard position play
not first in: raise or reraise all-in with 77, 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AK, AQ, AJ, call a standard raise from the button if you don’t have one of the raising hands listed above, but you have an ace – otherwise fold
